12 Indian Cultural Refrences in Anime | Animetaka

Indian Anime References. We all know what’s the origin of anime. It’s Japan right.

But Japanese shows have taken a lot of inspiration from India and its culture. Be it Naruto or Dragon ball Z. 

Even these popular shonen have a lot of Indian mythological references as well as several characters based upon Indian Gods and mythological characters.

Sanskrit words are used very often in many anime shows. In this article, we’ll talk about some of the Indian references in anime.There are a lot of indian references in anime shows .

1. Chakra ( Naruto)

I think every otaku knows which anime are we going to talk about. Yeah, you got me it is Naruto.

I don’t think there is an episode in Naruto where the word chakra is not used.

Chakra is a Sanskrit word. Chakra represents energy in the show but chakra’s meaning is chakra points from which that energy flows . Chakra are focal points of energy.

2. 8 Kais and King Yemma
( Dragon Ball Z)

King Yemma Yamraaj

8 Kais and king Yemma are direct references to the 8 protectors of 8 Directions ‘Asta Dipala’ and Hindu deity ‘ Yamraj ‘.

Yamraj is the god of death in Indian mythology who decides whether person must go to hell or heaven and Yemma is also same with almost the same physical appearance.

3. Arjuna (Earth Maiden)

 In this anime show there is also a character named Arjuna who has sharp archery skills and resembles Arjuna from Mahabharata.

But Arjuna from Mahabharta was a man where in the show Arjuna is a teenage girl named Juna Ariyoshi. She is chosen as “Avatar Of Time ” by a powerful entity named ‘Chris’. 

Her role is to protect Earth from Raaja . Raaja is not a group or person but  visualized by worm-like creatures. 

4. Ganesha ( DanMachi )

Ganesha is Lord Shiva’s and Parvati’s son in Hindu mythology. He is said to be the most intelligent person in the world.

In the show Danmachi or Is it wrong to try to pickup girls in a dungeon there’s also present a character with a mask resembling Ganesha’s face.

As Ganesha had a head of an elephant and the body of a human same way the character’s mask has elephant tusks showing a great resemblance. Also, the name is the same so 😁.

5. Karna (Type Moon Academy Chibichuki)

Karna is also a character of Mahabharata and in the show type-moon academy a character with the name Karna is present that is almost the same as the original one.

Also has the same kind of shield and attacks as the original one. I liked this rendition of Karna very much. Just like Karna he can also fire nukes a.k.a Bhramastra from his bow.

6. Calcutta(Jojo's Bizzare Adventure)

In the third chapter of the manga Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure stardust crusaders the characters visited the indian city Calcutta.

The writer and VFX team of the show has visualized Calcutta in a great manner.

All the small details like Calcutta taxi cars, traffic jams, and mobs were shown with great accuracy and are a great representation of Indian culture on the international level.

7. Saree (Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni & Rental Girlfriend)

In this anime, some of the characters are wearing a dress that resembles a traditional Indian outfit called a saree in a ceremony.

Though it does not matches a lot but looking at the appearance of the dress we can say it has the look of a saree.

But in a manga named rental girlfriend Episode 111 you can see the girl named Mizuhara in a Beautiful Saree and doing the Namaste gesture of Indian greeting.

8. Hindi Poster (Boku No Hero academia)

In Boku No Hero Academia Season 2 Episode 15 we can see a Hindi poster while Deku is running towards something. I was shocked while I first saw it.

Though the word written is a Nepali word ‘ Biralo that means ‘Cat‘. But the thing is it’s written in Hindi that is the Indian regional language.

9. Indian Named Characters(Black Butler)

There is a whole arc of episodes named curry arc in the show black Buttler in which there are three Indian characters a Prince from Bengal Soma Kadar and his butler Agni who are searching for a woman named Mina.

Those are a whole bunch of Indian references for a japanese show.

10. India (Hetalia)

In the anime show Hetalia each character represents a country hence there is present a character named after India and he is a joyful and nice guy in the show.

11. Aishwarya Rai (Digimon)

Aishwarya Rai who is a very beautiful and talented actress in the Bollywood industry and Miss world 1994 has an anime character named after her name in Digimon .

Though the character looks nothing like her but still her name is used in a famous Japanese show. That’s a proud moment for Indians.

12. Shakunetsu Kabaddi:-

If I tell you there is a whole anime based upon an Indian Sports you won’t believe me but it’s true.

Shakunetsu Kabaddi is a spring anime show based upon the Indian sport Kabaddi and started airing in April 2021. That is the biggest Indian reference you can see in an anime.
